Dermalogica Invigorating Shave Gel

Dermalogica is a new brand to me, and I was intrigued by their heavy use of dermatological research. Interested to know more, I decided to reach out and try some samples. The Dermalogica Invigorating Shave Gel was my first introduction to Dermalogica, and it was a pretty good first impression.

In the video below, you can see a demonstration of the gel’s lather. As I pointed out, I’m not a huge fan of shave gels, generally, because they tend to lack the full lather that makes wet shaving so fun and effective. The lather on this shave gel is not too terrible, and it will fill up a bowl easily. Note that you should restrain yourself and use water conservatively with this, or you will get almost no lather at all.

The biggest downside to this shave gel is that the lather is really soapy, rather than foamy, so when I applied it to my face, I had to shave quick or the bubbles would pop, essentially leaving me to dry shave. This was quite annoying. However, here’s where the Dermalogica Invigorating Shave Gel earns its keep: skincare.

After the shave, despite the subpar lather, my skin was left feeling amazing. It was better than some cleansers and face washes that I’ve used. I felt truly…invigorated? My skin felt clean, my pores were open and breathing, and it left my face feeling like it just ate a peppermint. This was pretty impressive, and something I don’t usually get out of shaving products.

Dermalogica products are developed by the International Dermal Institute, so I can’t say I’m really surprised with this result. This shave gel, which will run you $19, is a good shaving product, but an excellent skincare product. I can’t imagine tackling a full beard with this gel, but if you’re a daily shaver who just needs some quick maintenance, I’d consider this an option. This shave gel will also cut down on your costs for aftershaves or shaving balms, because it takes care of that for you, somewhat justifying the cost.
